Our Wedding Design Process

Wedding design isn’t about picking a colour palette and calling it a day. It’s about creating a vibe that feels like you, makes sense in the space, and flows effortlessly from start to finish.

Our approach to wedding design starts long before florals or linens are chosen – let’s dive into our process and how the Melissa Alison Events team will turn your vision into reality!

Step One: Understanding You

Before we ever talk about décor, we spend time getting to know our couples – what they love, what they don’t, and how they want their wedding day to feel.

Some couples come to us with a Pinterest board categorized and years in the making. Others have zero idea of what they want, and need help from the ground up.

We ask questions like:

  • Do you prefer mixed metals, or wood and glass elements?
  • Are you drawn to maximalist styles or subtle details?
  • Do you want your day to feel intimate, energetic, cozy, elevated, or a mix of everything?

We pay close attention to patterns – colours you like, textures you mention, spaces you love, and even things you really don’t want. All of that becomes the foundation for your wedding design.

Step Two: Letting the Venue Lead

One of the biggest design mistakes we see is fighting the venue’s existing decor, colours and layout.

Every space has its own personality – architecture, surroundings, light, scale -and great wedding design leans into that instead of working against it. A mountain lodge doesn’t need to feel like a ballroom. A modern brewery or restaurant doesn’t need rustic accents.

We always encourage our couples to choose a design with the venue, not against it.

That could look like:

  • Instead of hiding a beautiful backdrop with a large arch, highlighting it lower flowers on pillars
  • Choosing textures, colours and materials that complement the space
  • Adjusting the layout to improve guest flow and experience

When the design aligns with the venue’s aesthetic, everything feels more intentional and often more elevated with less décor – saving you money!

Step Three:  What’s the vibe

Once we understand the couple and the space, we define the overall vibe. Instead of focusing on trends, we focus on atmosphere:

  • How guests will move through the day in a logistic, yet aesthetical flow of the day
  • How ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception connect visually
  • Where the ‘wow’ areas should be

This is where colour palettes, floral direction, furniture, lighting, and styling choices are refined into a cohesive vision.

Step Four: Turning Vision Into Reality

Here’s where the fun begins! We work on creating a design deck for you which lays out everything from your ceremony through to the end of the evening. We work together to finalize the details, and once you sign off on the perfect design, we collaborate closely with florists, rental companies, stationers, and other creative partners to ensure the vision translates seamlessly from concept to setup. Every choice is intentional, from the scale of centerpieces to how signage is displayed to the way tables are laid out.

And on the wedding day? We’re there to make sure everything feels exactly as planned!

When design is done well, it feels natural, balanced, and cohesive. That’s always our goal – to take your preferences, your venue, and your vision, and turn them into a wedding that feels intentional, elevated, and completely personal!
