Getting legally married in Alberta involves several steps, and it's something that all of our couples ask for help with! Whether you're a local, or having your destination wedding in Alberta, here is a breakdown on the steps to help you navigate the process.

Obtain a Marriage License

Before your wedding ceremony, you must obtain a marriage license, which confirms that you meet Alberta's legal requirements for marriage.

Application Process: Both parties should visit a registry agent office together to apply. You'll need to provide identification and any other applicable documentation (eg. divorce papers from a previous marriage).

Validity: The license is valid for three months from the date of issue.

Fee: There's a fee of $40, with additional service fees varying by registry.

Choose Your Ceremony Type

In Alberta, you can opt for either a religious or civil ceremony:

Religious Ceremony: Conducted by a registered religious officiant according to the practices of their faith. You should make sure the officiant is authorized by Vital Statistics.

Civil Ceremony: Performed by a government-appointed marriage commissioner.

Choose Your Officiant

Your ceremony must be officiated by someone legally authorized in Alberta - either a religious officiant, marriage commissioner, or have a friend or family member apply to be a temporary marriage commissioner.

Plan the Ceremony

Ensure your ceremony follows Alberta's legal requirements:

Marriage License: Must be valid on the ceremony date.

Location: The ceremony must take place in Alberta.

Witnesses: Two adult witnesses (18 or older) are required to attend

Declarations: In civil ceremonies, the couple must make specific declarations in the presence of the officiant and witnesses

Register the Marriage

After your ceremony, your officiant will submit the documents to Vital Statistics to officially register your marriage!

Request a Marriage Certificate

After registration, you can request a marriage certificate through a registry agent, as legal proof of your wedding.
